St. Nicholas Church is a Grade II* listed building with a unique clock location on the south-west corner of its 14th-century tower. The church holds the tomb of Fulke Greville, grandfather of the famous poet and statesman Fulke Greville, 1st Baron Brooke. Its impressive Georgian nave, designed by architect Francis Smith of Warwick, features Doric columns and a plastered ceiling and was rebuilt by the Woodward brothers in 1729.
The stunning and historical old rectory, a beautiful Grade II listed building, is situated conveniently adjacent to the charming church. It boasts gorgeous red brick with intricately designed brick “dentil” cornice and a stylish tile roof topped with stunning stone coped brick gable parapets, as well as striking brick end stacks.
This house was built in 1796 – in the days when the rector of a market town was considered a more prestigious post than it is today. The house became a private residence in the 1980s. It has an important claim to fame: the 11th century Alcester ‘Tau Cross’ was found in the garden – this is now in the British Museum (although at the time of writing it was temporarily on display in the town).
There are Disabled parking spaces on the High Street near Specsavers and in all of the car parks listed on the ‘Where to park’ page.
The church is located on the High Street so a person with mobility issues could be dropped off right at the church gate. There are two low steps at the main church entrance but a ramp is available at the north-west aisle door. You will need to ask for the doors to be opened from the inside. Please note that there are no toilets in the church.
Please note that the Wedding Reception will be held in the main Bailiff’s Hall which is up a flight of stairs. There is a chairlift available and an additional toilet on this floor.
The Rectory garden, the venue for the the evening reception, is all on one level and the toilets are on the ground floor.
Please let us know if you have any questions or wish to let us know in advance of any accessibility concerns so that we can try to ensure your needs are catered for on the day.
